Virtual Machine Data Recovery
Lost access to an important virtual machine or datastore?
mService Sweden AB provides professional recovery for corrupted, deleted, or inaccessible virtual environments. We recover ESXi datastores, VMware VMDK files, VirtualBox VDI disks, Proxmox VM storage, and Hyper-V VHD/VHDX files. With more than 25 years of experience, we help businesses and organizations securely recover critical systems and data.

Professional Recovery from Virtual Environments
Virtual machine data can be lost because of hardware failure, accidental deletion, datastore corruption, failed RAID systems, damaged snapshots, or interrupted migrations.
We assist with:
Our specialists examine the underlying storage before working on the virtual machine files. This helps protect the original data and identify the safest recovery method.
ESXi Datastore Recovery
VMware ESXi commonly stores virtual machines on VMFS datastores. If a datastore becomes inaccessible, multiple virtual servers may disappear at the same time.
Common causes include:
Do not create a new datastore on the affected volume. Reinitializing or formatting the storage can overwrite metadata and virtual disk data required for recovery.
We analyze the storage structure, reconstruct recoverable VMFS information, and extract available virtual machine files.
VMware VMDK Recovery
A VMDK file contains the virtual hard disk used by a VMware virtual machine. If the VMDK descriptor, data file, snapshot chain, or underlying storage becomes damaged, the virtual machine may fail to start.
Our VMware VMDK recovery service covers:
- Deleted VMDK files
- Corrupted virtual disks
- Missing or damaged descriptors
- Broken snapshot chains
- Failed snapshot consolidation
- Inaccessible VMFS datastores
- VMDK files recovered from damaged RAID systems
- Virtual disks that will not mount or boot
When a complete virtual machine cannot be restored, you may still be able to recover individual databases, documents, configuration files, or other important data from the virtual disk.
VirtualBox VDI Recovery
Oracle VirtualBox uses VDI files to store virtual disk data. A VDI may become corrupted after an unexpected shutdown, storage failure, interrupted transfer, or snapshot problem.
We examine damaged VDI files and their supporting storage to locate recoverable partitions and files. Recovery may be possible even when VirtualBox no longer opens the virtual machine.
Avoid repeatedly modifying the original VDI, merging snapshots, or running repair tools without a verified backup.
These operations may permanently change the virtual disk structure.
Proxmox VM Storage Recovery
Proxmox environments may store virtual machines and containers on LVM, LVM-thin, ZFS, Ceph, local directories, NAS devices, or other storage systems.
We assist with recovery from:
The recovery process depends on the storage type and the host system’s condition. We first secure the affected disks and analyze the underlying storage before reconstructing virtual machine data.
Hyper-V VHD and VHDX Recovery
Microsoft Hyper-V uses VHD and VHDX files as virtual hard disks. These files may become inaccessible due to storage failure, corruption, deletion, snapshot issues, or an interrupted expansion or conversion.
Do not delete checkpoints or manually rename files in a damaged snapshot chain. Preserving the original file structure gives us the best opportunity to reconstruct the virtual machine.
Our Hyper-V recovery service includes:

Keep every disk from the original system and record its slot position when possible. Do not rebuild the RAID or allow a controller to initialize the drives.
Recovery from Failed RAID, NAS, and SAN Storage
Virtual machines are often stored on RAID arrays, NAS systems, or shared SAN storage. In these cases, you usually must recover the underlying storage before you can reconstruct the virtual disk files.

What to Do After a Virtual Machine Failure
Correct action after a failure can prevent further data loss.
If the storage makes unusual sounds or repeatedly disconnects, power it down immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions About Virtual Machine Data Recovery
Can you recover a deleted virtual machine?
Recovery may be possible if its storage blocks have not been overwritten. Stop using the datastore immediately to prevent new data from replacing the deleted VM.
Can an ESXi datastore be recovered after formatting?
In some cases, yes. The result depends on the type of formatting and how much new information has been written afterward. Do not create or mount a new datastore on the affected volume.
Can you repair a corrupted VMDK file?
It may be possible to reconstruct the virtual disk or recover individual files from it. Preserve the original VMDK, descriptor, and snapshot files.
Can data be recovered from a damaged VDI file?
Yes, depending on the type and extent of the corruption. We can analyze the VDI and attempt to recover its partitions, file system, or individual files.
Do you recover Proxmox virtual machines?
Yes. We work with Proxmox storage based on technologies such as QCOW2, RAW, LVM, LVM-thin, and ZFS. Recovery depends on the condition of the underlying storage.
Can you recover Hyper-V checkpoints?
Damaged AVHD or AVHDX checkpoint chains may be recoverable. Do not delete, rename, or merge the files before we examine the system.
Can you recover only selected files?
In many cases, yes. If restoring the complete VM is not possible or necessary, we may be able to extract selected databases, documents, or application files.
Is business data handled confidentially?
Yes. We handle storage devices, virtual machines, and recovered information confidentially throughout the recovery process.
